How Much Does Personal Training Cost? (And What Are You Actually Paying For?)

Two men preparing for a lift.

If you’ve ever looked up “How much does personal training cost?” you’ve probably seen everything from:

  • “Free training” at big box gyms
  • $40–$60/session at chain gyms
  • $100+ per session at private studios

So… what gives? Why is there such a huge range? And how do you know what’s worth it versus what’s just expensive?

I’m Joseph, owner of Unleash’d Strength Gym in Manassas Park, VA. We’ve been coaching people since 2019, and I want to walk you through this in a real, no-BS way—using both typical market ranges and exact numbers from our gym so you can see how it plays out in the real world.

The Short Answer: It Depends (But Here Are Real Numbers)

Across the industry, I’ve personally seen:

  • Free “training” at places like Planet Fitness (usually quick, generic guidance, not true coaching)
  • Standard sessions ranging from $60–$100+ at many gyms
  • Premium studios charging $120–$140 per session for 1-on-1

At our gym, here’s how our pricing breaks down:

A la carte 1-on-1 sessions

  • Single 1-on-1 session: $115

Useful if you need a form check, a tune-up, or a second opinion—but honestly, not usually the best path for big long-term goals.

All-inclusive 1-on-1 coaching packages

All of these include membership + a full plan, not just sessions:

  • 1x/week: $420 per month
  • 2x/week: $800 per month
  • 3x/week: $1,140 per month

Every training package includes:

  • Gym membership
  • Your training sessions
  • A full program to follow between sessions
  • Nutritional guidance
  • Access to our training app
  • Ongoing trainer support & accountability

So you’re not just buying “three hours with a trainer.” You’re buying a complete system.

Small group training (semi-private)

  • 1x/week: $280 per month
  • 2x/week: $400 per month

You still get a plan, guidance, and support—just shared with a small group instead of 100% 1-on-1.

On-Ramp Program (for beginners or rusty lifters)

  • 4-session On-Ramp: $399

This is designed to give you a solid foundation: how to squat, hinge, press, pull, and navigate the gym confidently so you’re not wandering around guessing.

Our Philosophy: You’re Not Paying for an Hour, You’re Paying for a Plan

A single workout can make you sweat.

A plan can change your life.

Our entire philosophy is built around this simple idea:

“A single workout only does so much. A plan that helps with sessions, additional workouts, nutritional guidance, and monthly weigh-ins is much more valuable and massively increases the likelihood of success.”

When someone sees the price of training, they’re usually thinking:

“Wow, that’s a lot for an hour.”

But that hour is the tip of the iceberg. Underneath it, you’re really paying for:

  • The programming behind the scenes
  • The years of experience and education your coach brings
  • The accountability that keeps you from quitting after 3 weeks
  • The nutrition coaching that makes your training actually work
  • The check-ins, adjustments, and support you get when life inevitably punches you in the face

That’s why, at our gym, everything is structured as a comprehensive package, not random one-off workouts.

Real Client Paths: Different Budgets, Same Goal—Progress

We’ve seen every kind of situation: tight budgets, all-in commitments, and everything between.

1. The “All-In” 3x/Week 1-on-1 Client

We’ve had clients go 3x/week 1-on-1, follow their program, track their food, and show up ready to work.
Not surprisingly, they saw rapid, dramatic progress.

Why? Because:

  • They had clear structure
  • Multiple weekly check-points with their coach
  • High accountability
  • Very little room to drift off track

If you want the fastest path and your budget allows it, this is hard to beat.

2. The Small Group Client on a Budget

We’ve also had people choose small group training 1–2x/week because:

  • They needed more budget-friendly support
  • They liked the community vibe and energy of a small group
  • They were willing to put in work on their own outside sessions

And they still built strength, lost weight, and gained confidence.

The key variable wasn’t the price—it was that they:

  • Showed up
  • Followed the plan between sessions
  • Communicated with their coach

What you do outside the session is a massive predictor of your results.

Why Is One Trainer $35/Session and Another $140?

Let’s be honest: sometimes cheap can still be good. There are newer trainers who charge less and care a lot.

But often, low prices come with trade-offs:

  • Inexperienced trainers still figuring things out
  • Random workouts thrown together on the fly
  • Minimal or no long-term planning
  • Little support outside of the session

On the flip side, higher prices are often tied to:

  • More experience & education
  • Trainers who write long-term plans, not random circuits
  • Systems for tracking progress
  • Better communication and support
  • Gyms that invest in quality equipment and environment

At our gym, we price based on two things:

  1. Hiring good, experienced trainers
  2. Attracting clients who are truly ready to commit

We don’t want to be the cheapest. We want to be the most effective for the people who are serious about changing.

How We Help You Choose the Right Package

We use what we call the prescriptive method.

Instead of asking, “So, what do you want to buy?” we ask:

  • What are your specific goals?
  • What’s your timeline?
  • What’s your training history?
  • Any injuries or limitations?
  • How many days per week can you realistically commit?

Then we match that to the right level of support.

For example:

  • If you’re brand new, anxious about the gym, and want a big change → we may recommend 2–3x/week 1-on-1 at first.
  • If you’re somewhat experienced, just need structure and accountability, and are on a budget → small group 1–2x/week might be perfect.
  • If you’re mostly comfortable, just need direction and a push → On-Ramp + a small group or lower-frequency 1-on-1 could work.

The point is: we don’t just throw numbers at you. We prescribe what makes sense based on your life and goals.

Common Reactions to Price (And Why They’re Normal)

When people hear the price, we usually get one of three reactions:

  1. “That’s more than I expected, I need to think about it.”
Totally normal. Good coaching is an investment.
  2. “I can see the value—that actually makes sense.”
These are often people who’ve tried the “do it on my own” route many times.
  3. Immediate sign-ups.
Sometimes someone sees exactly what they’ve been missing—structure, support, and a plan—and they’re all in.

We never pressure. We just make sure you understand what you’re getting, not just what you’re paying.

How to Evaluate Personal Training Offers (Anywhere)

Wherever you’re reading this from, here are some questions to ask any trainer or gym:

  1. “What’s included beyond just the session?”
    – Is there a full program? Nutrition guidance? Check-ins?
  2. “Will I have a structured plan between sessions?”
    – Or am I on my own the other 5–6 days?
  3. “How will we track progress?”
    – We use things like monthly weigh-ins/measurements, performance goals, and app-based tracking.
  4. “How far ahead do you program?”
    – Good trainers think in phases and long-term progress, not just tomorrow’s workout.
  5. “What happens if I struggle or fall off?”
    – Do they reach out, adjust, and support—or just show up and count reps?

Cheap training isn’t automatically bad, and expensive training isn’t automatically good.
You’re looking for alignment: the level of coaching support that matches your goals, your personality, and your budget.

The Real Question Isn’t “How Much Does It Cost?”

The real question is:

“Am I just looking for a workout to make me sweat…or am I looking for a coach to guide my journey?”

Almost anyone can make you tired in 60 minutes.

But if you want to:

  • Build real strength
  • Improve your health
  • Learn how to train for life
  • And actually reach your goals instead of restarting every January…

…then you’re not just shopping for the lowest price. You’re choosing a partner in your progress.
