Let’s be real about what’s actually behind this question.
It’s not really about whether a trainer would help. Deep down you already know they would. The real question is value. Do I need a personal trainer as a beginner? Am I actually going to get something out of this, or can I save some money and figure it out on my own?
Fair question. So let me answer it honestly.
No. You might be able to figure it out on your own.
But that comes at a cost.
You’ll waste time figuring things out. You increase your risk of injury. And you’ll definitely delay the results you’re after.
I see it all the time. Someone grinds it out solo for a few months, fumbling around the gym, not totally sure if what they’re doing is even moving them closer to their goals. They committed to showing up, which is huge, but there’s no promise the work they’re putting in is actually working.
Now here’s what changes when a beginner starts with a trainer instead.
You maximize every minute you spend in the gym.
Those first sessions on your own get burned on figuring out a routine, which machines to use, and how to even use the machines. With a trainer, everything is planned out. We tell you what weight to use, how many reps, how many sets, and what movements to pair together.
You’re not guessing. You’re progressing. A lot of our beginners can measure real progress in just the first couple of sessions.
So when people ask me “do I need a personal trainer as a beginner,” my honest answer is no, you don’t need one. But it’s the fastest, safest way to actually get where you want to go.
Let me show you what that looks like.
Take our member Ryan. He came in wanting to get strong, lose weight, and build a real routine. He knew he needed accountability and guidance to get started.

We paired him with Coach Porter. Porter has a BS in Kinesiology, is a Tactical Strength and Conditioning Facilitator, and is a NASM Certified Personal Trainer. That education gives him a serious background in teaching strength training safely, which matters a lot when you’re brand new.
Ryan committed to training twice a week and immediately started making progress. He lost 35 pounds in his first 10 weeks.
But here’s the part I love.
After a few months with Porter, Ryan had the foundations down. He understood the gym. He’d fallen in love with the process and the results. So he downgraded to our standard membership and went on to lose another 30 pounds completely on his own.
That’s the whole point. A good trainer doesn’t keep you dependent. They give you a foundation you carry for life.
So if you’re a beginner still on the fence, here’s my honest take.
I’ve been lifting for nearly 20 years. And I still have a coach who knows more than I do and helps me make progress faster. I have a mentor who helps me as a business owner. I have a nutrition coach who keeps my body in check.
When I want results fast, I hire someone who’s already been where I’m trying to go. Yes, it costs more. But it gets me there.
